' END OF THE ROAD'

The Comet Warriors wrapped up their 2009-2010 season with a loss to DeWitt/St.Johns on Wednesday.  CW fought hard but came up short with a final score of 4 - 0.  Grand Ledge / Waverly ended the season with an overall record of 14 wins, 10 losses, and 4 ties.

Keep your stick on the ice, and we'll see you next year!

(and don't forget, the annual CW Golf Outing is June 27th, 2010)

March 1, 2010

' UNITED IN VICTORY'

The Comet Warriors started the State Tournament with a 5 - 2 win on Monday against the team from Kalamazoo United at Wings Stadium Annex.  CW controlled the puck throughout the first period, getting two power play goals by Treven Fech, with assists going to Andrew Dolehanty, Adam "Juan" Epstein, and Tyler Wise.

The second period saw CW go up 3-0 with another power play goal halfway through the period by Zach Rogers, assisted by Ricky Wise and Andrew Dolehanty. Kalamazoo converted on a 5-on-3 power play with 30 seconds remaining in the second period.

After Kalamazoo made the score 3 to 2 with 6 minutes to go in the third, CW answered when Nick Patino scored unassisted with 3 minutes to go in the third.  This was followed by a Zach Rogers empty net goal in the last minute, assisted by Andrew Dolehanty.  Austin Hull faced 17 shots.  CW posted 32 shots against the Kalamazoo net minder.

Next Game:  Grand Ledge Waverly meets up with our good friends from DeWitt/St.Johns at 6:00 pm on Wednesday night March 3rd.  The winner of this game will go to the Region 2 Finals, 7:00 pm March 6th, at Grandville's Southside Arena.

February 28, 2010

'A GOLDEN BANQUET'

The Grand Ledge Waverly Varsity Ice Hockey Team held their end of year banquet on Sunday.  A good time was had by all (until Cindy Cosby scored in OT for Team Canada!).  See award winners under the awards tab.

February 27, 2010

'INTO THE HORNETS NEST'

On Saturday, February 27th, the Comet Warriors completed their regular season schedule by taking on the Hornets from Flint Kearsley at Perani's Arena in Flint.  The hard fought battle ended in a 2 - 0 shutout victory for goalie Austin Hull and the team from Grand Ledge Waverly.  Both goals were scored by Treven Fech, with assists by Zach Rogers (2) and Andrew Dolehanty.

The Comet Warriors end their regular season with a record of 13 wins, 9 loses, and 4 hard fought ties.

'SENIOR NIGHT'
6:00 PM,  Friday, February 26th

On Friday, February 26th, Grand Ledge Waverly Varsity Hockey honored their four senior class members:  defensemen Drew Michaels & Andrew Dolehanty, and forwards Ricky Wise & Zach Rogers.  This is the first year for Drew and Zach; Ricky and Andrew have been with the Comet Warriors for three years.

CW defeated Jackson United on Senior Night 1-0 with a first period goal by Jack Klingbiel, with an assist to Andrew Dolehanty.

February 14, 2010

'HOST-AT-YOST'

On Saturday, February 13th, the Comet Warriors hosted the Clio Mustangs at Yost Arena on the University of Michigan campus.  The gracious hosts spotted the Mustangs a 1 - 0 lead before knotting the score at 1 - 1 when Ricky Wise bounced a shot off the back of the Clio net minder.  After letting Clio regain the lead, Zack Rogers tied the game at 2 by slipping the puck past the Mustang goalie.  Following a scoreless 2nd period, CW scored three unanswered goals to finish the game at 5 - 2.  Third period goal scorers included Zach Rogers, an empty netter by Treven Fech, and a wicked blue line slapper by Adam "Juan" Epstein.  The large crowd at Yost was estimated by some to be just a shade under 1,200.

Grand Ledge / Waverly's next contest will be on Friday night, February 26, 2010 at the Summit.  This final home game of the season is also Senior Night.  Hope to see you there!

February 12, 2010

'TOUGH BOUNCE'

Grand Ledge / Waverly lost a 2 - 1 overtime game to the Eastside Stars on Friday night at Suburban Ice.  Puck bounces off a skateblade in overtime and slips into the goal.  Enough said.

February 6, 2010

'FOUR-PETE'

The Comet Warriors started off February by winning the 2010 Durand Invitational Tournament.  For the fourth consecutive year!  Friday night's game saw CW down by a score of 1 - 0 after the first period.  Following what could only assumed to be marvelous coaching between periods, the Comet Warriors scored 3 goals in the second period and bested the Flushing Raiders by a score of 3 - 1.  On Saturday afternoon CW readily handled the team from Durand / Lake Fenton by an identical score of 3 - 1, with goals by Nick Patino (2) and Adam 'Juan' Epstein.

Grand Ledge / Waverly's next game will be at Suburban Ice against the Eastside Stars at 6:30 pm on Friday, February 12th; and then an 8:30 pm game on Saturday, February 13th at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor against the Clio Mustangs.  Hope to see you there.

February 2, 2010

'EVEN STEVEN'

The Comet Warriors finished up January with a 1 - 1 - 1 stretch, bringing their overall record to 8 - 8 - 4.  CW hosted Jackson Lumen Christi on Wednesday, January 27th.  (I know, weird, JLC coming to Lansing on a weekday?  Hard to believe!)  The Comet Warriors dropped the contest to a goon good team from Jackson by a score of 3 - 0.  CW followed up on Friday night with a 2 - 2 final score against the Patriots from Lansing Catholic, Mason, Charlotte, ...dopey, sneezy, etc., etc.  On Saturday January 30th the Comet Warriors celebrated Military Appreciation Night by besting the Knights from Wayland Union by a score of 6 to 1.  Goals were tallied by Nick Patino, Jack Klingbiel, Ricky Wise, and a hat trick by Treven Fech.

Grand Ledge / Waverly's next games will be Friday, February 5th and Saturday, February 6th at Iceland Arena in Flint.  These games are part of the Durand Invitational Tournament.  Friday's game will start at 7:30 pm.  Hope to see you there.

'BACK IN ZACK'

The Comet Warriors traveled to the Annex this weekend to take on the Kalamazoo United team.  Following a back and forth battle the game remained tied after two periods.  The first CW goal was scored by Zach Rogers (welcome back Zach!), and the second by Treven Fech.  CW sealed the game in the third period with goals by Treven Fech and Andrew  Dolehanty.

CW's next two games will be league games this weekend against the Holt Rams and DeWitt/St. Johns.  Friday night's game against Holt will be at the Summit at 8:00 pm.  Saturday's 7:30 pm game against DeWitt/St. Johns at Suburban Ice will be the final game of the CAAC Showcase.

January 9, 2010

CW split their league games this weekend: losing 2 - 1 on Friday to Okemos, and winning a 5 - 2 game against Jackson United on Saturday.  The Saturday game was tied at 1 through two periods when CW busted out with 4 goals in the third, including a hat trick by Treven Fech.

Grand Ledge / Waverly's next game will be Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm against Kalamazoo United.  The game will be at the Annex in Kalamazoo.  Hope to see you there.

The Comet Warrior hockey team would like to thank the 2nd grade teachers at Grand Ledge's Delta Center Elementary.  The CW skaters visited the four 2nd grade class rooms last week to let the children know the importance of involvement in their community.  The 2nd graders had lots of questions for the team and were thrilled when they each received autographed copies of the latest CW team poster.  After the visit the team transported food collected by the school children to the local food bank.

December 18/19, 2009
The Comet Warrior hockey team was in the holiday spirit this week.

On Friday night the CW skaters were looking and feeling green. It was Environmental Awareness night for the first round games of the 2nd Annual Grand Ledge / Waverly Invitational Tournament.   CW 're-cycled' the puck over and over in the offensive zone, and they 'reduced' the Durand Railroaders  in a mercy-rule shortened 8 - 0 victory.

Saturday's Championship game had the Comet Warriors seeing red.  CW battled the Dragons from Swartz Creek to a 0 - 0 score for 44 minutes.  However, penalties (both called and uncalled) resulted in CW letting in a single Swartz Creek power play goal in the final minute of play.
All was not lost though.  In addition to a runner up trophy, the team enjoyed a fine holiday gathering with friends and family at the Summit.  The Comet Warriors next action will be 7:00 pm, Monday night, December 21, 2009 against Jackson Lumen Christi, at Optimist Arena.   We hope to see you there!

CW Tops Holt 2 - 1
Saturday, December 5, 2009

The Grand Ledge / Waverly Comet Warriors defeated the Rams from Holt on Saturday night by a score of 2 - 1 in a CAAC League game.   Following a scoreless first period, the Rams scored their first and only goal in the second period on a 5 minute power play.  CW charged right back and answered with two power play goals of their own in the second period.  The first score was twenty seconds after a Holt cross checking penalty.  The rocket shot from the blue line by Wavo-defenseman Drew Michaels went top shelf right over the Holt goalie's stickside shoulder.

The second goal followed a Holt defender tripping up Wavo-defenseman Andrew Dolehanty on a center ice break away.   Five seconds later, with a Ricky Wise face off win and a pass from Andrew Dolehanty, Wavo-defenseman Adam "Juan" Epstein scored the game winner by lacing a shot from the blue line through three Holt defenders.

It was reported by multiple ear-witnesses that they could hear the faint voice of Arnold Horshack screaming "Ooh Ooh Ooh" following the game winning goal by #11.

CW's next games will be a CAAC League home game on Friday night, December 11, 2009 at the Summit against the combined team of Lansing Catholic, Mason, Charlotte, Lansing Christian, and I think about 4 other schools - not really sure exactly.  Game time is 8:00 pm.  The second league game this weekend will be a CAAC League home game at 7:00 pm on Saturday night with our best buddies from DeWitt/St. Johns.  Should be a crowded house for both games, so get there early.  We hope to see you there!

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS NIGHT
Friday, December 18th

Please plan on joining us on Friday night, December 18th at 6:00 pm for the 1st Grand Ledge / Waverly ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS NIGHT.  CW will be taking on the Durand Railroaders in the 2nd annual GL/W Invitational Hockey Tournament.  Think Green!

CW takes 2nd Place at
Andy Hanichen Tournament

The Comet Warriors gave it their all on Saturday afternoon but were unable to overcome a very good Grand Haven team in the Championship game of the Andy Hanichen Tournament in Muskegon.  While there were numerous reports that Grand Ledge / Waverly's Austin Hull "stood on his head" for the Championship Game, it just wasn't enough, as the 2-time defending tournament champions lost by a final score of 4-1 to the Pirates Buccaneers from Grand Haven.

CW started the weekend off with a 7-0 drubbing of the Panthers from West Ottawa.

CW's next game will be a CAAC League game on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Summit against the Rams from Holt.  We hope to see you there!

(As pointed out by a certain alumnus named "Rich", please note the wrong team mascot was used for Grand Haven.    I'm sorry, BUT Pirates was what I thought of when I saw their team logo   J ...sorry!)

Comet Warriors Have a Winning Weekend !
11-22-2009

The CW skaters tied the Okemos Chiefs 1-1 on Friday night and tied the Eastside Stars 0-0 on Saturday night.   However, the Comet Warriors' biggest victory of the weekend was helping out at the annual Poly Hockey State finals.  Poly Hockey is an adaptive sport similar to floor hockey.  The poly hockey athletes use plastic hockey sticks and pucks and play on a gym floor surface. The poly hockey competition included approximately 65 Poly Hockey teams from around the state, all competing for the gold at the Capital Centre Sports Complex.  Congratulations go out to all the competitors, and also to our CW skaters for helping to make the event such a success!

Coach Clifford gets his 100th Win !!!

The Comet Warriors spotted Kalamazoo United 2 early goals, but tied the game in the 2nd period, and pulled ahead 3-2 in the third period. This was Coach Brian Clifford's 100th victory in seven seasons with the Grand Ledge / Waverly Varsity Ice Hockey team.  A special banner was presented at the end of the game, signed by all the current players and several of his past players.  All alumni that were part of the 100 wins are welcome to drop by and sign the banner!  Go CW !

Comet Warriors Take the Show to the Joe !

The Grand Ledge / Waverly Varsity hockey team opened up the 2009-2010 campaign on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena with a very good showing against the combined team from Durand / Lake Fenton.  Wearing their new uniforms in front of a crowd estimated by some to be at least 2,900, the CW skaters got off to a fast start with two quick goals in the first period.  While the MHSAA frowns upon keeping score for this 'scrimmage', it was noted that the lamp above the Durand goal keeper illuminated 7 times over the course of three periods.  In keeping with his environmental awareness mentality, CW goaltender Austin Hull reduced Joe Louis Arena's electrical costs by keeping the light behind him off.  (No truth at all to the rumor that the light may have went on but was blocked by the goal tender's rather large head.  None what so ever.)

The Comet Warriors would love to see you at our next game - 7:00 pm on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the Summit.  CW will be taking on Kalamazoo United.  Hope to see you there!

LAKE PLACID, NY – The Comet Warriors concluded their training camp with a visit to the site where the US won Olympic Gold in 1980.  With friends and family looking on, the team unveiled their new jersey in honor of the Miracle on Ice, the 30th Anniversary of USA Hockey Gold.  Their current jerseys now include:  white – home; blue – away; 3rd – yellow; 4th – special event black; 5th – Military Appreciation camouflage; and 6th – 30th anniversary Lake Placid with gold medal.  While on their journey the team visited the 90 meter and 120 meter ski jumps, the Olympic bobsled and the luge track.  A daring few rode the bobsled down the mountain.  The group visited the Olympic Museum, and of course skated at the Herb Brooks 1980 Olympic Arena.  The trip concluded with a visit to RPI in Troy, NY.  Following a tour of the RPI Engineers’ hockey locker room and training facility, the Comet Warriors were invited to watch the Division 1 RPI game versus Brown University.  RPI defeated the Bears from Brown by a score of 3 to 1 at Houston Field House.

Grand Ledge/Waverly Varsity Hockey: Commitment & effort on the ice, in the classroom, and in our community

Our goal as an organization is to create excellence on and off the ice.  Our student athletes are challenged to be the best they
can be in the classroom as well as on the ice.  Each player is a student first and an athlete second.

The coaching staff regards academics as the highest priority and players are mandated to attend weekly study tables,
tutoring sessions, and obtain weekly progress reports.  On the ice players are dedicated to play with dignity, teamwork, and fair
play.  The lessons learned in high school through athletics can be used throughout our player's lives.

Our athletes are also taught about the value of being a positive and productive community member.  Through
numerous community service projects our athletes are able to give back to the communities that are so generous in supporting
our Varsity hockey program.   Thank you for your unending support !
