Grand Ledge Waverly 1
Rockford 3

(3-2-09)

The Grand Ledge Waverly Varsity Hockey team wrapped up their 08 - 09 campaign on Monday night with a 3 - 1 loss to a very good Rockford Rams team at Patterson Arena.  The game was 0 - 0 after the first period, but the Ram's speed eventually proved too much for CW to handle.  Rockford converted twice during a second period 5 on 3 power play.  CW cut the deficit to two, late in the third period, with a Kyle Klaahsen power play goal off a Josh Popa shot from the point, after it was knocked down in front by Doug Smotel.

(2-23-09)

The Comet Warriors came through with a very convincing eight to nil victory (two period mercy) against the Lansing Catholic Central Cougars on Monday night.  CW opened the scoring after just 23 seconds in the first period with a goal by Senior Captain Doug Smotel.  Smotel would end up with 5 goals on the night.  Other scorers included Jordan Pier, Senior Captain Evan Olds, and Tyler Wise.

The Comet Warriors will need a victory or a tie this Saturday in Jackson to win the CAAC League title outright.

The Wise brothers decided to throw a 2nd period house party in the CW penalty box.  Invitees included John Duckworth, Kyle Klaahsen, and Dylan Deatsman.  (Note:  a good time was had by all J)

Time to Get Back to Work

Grand Ledge Waverly produced a less than stellar performance against DeWitt St. Johns on Saturday night, resulting in a 5 to 3 defeat.   CW fell behind by two goals in the first period, but was able to tie the game at 2 all, and tie the game again at 3 all.  Senior Captain Evan Olds scored 2 for the Comet Warriors, while Senior Captain Doug Smotel scored the third.  Next up for CW will be their final home game against the Lansing Catholic Cougars on February 23rd.  A win will secure at least a tie for the CAAC Championship.  CW's final game will be Saturday February 28th in Jackson against the Vikings of Jackson High.  CW will need to get at least 3 out of 4 points in these final two games to secure the CAAC Championship outright.

Grand Ledge Waverly 2
Holt 1

(2-13-09)

The Comet Warriors escaped senior night with a 2 to 1 victory over the Holt Rams on Friday night.  Holt opened the scoring when Nick Wilkinson scored with 29 seconds remaining in the first period.  CW responded with 1 minute remaining in the second period when Kyle Klaahsen scored off a sweet pass from John Duckworth.  The game remained tied until 3:23 left in third when Treven Fech, positioned in front of the Holt net (but not too close),  scored on a pass from behind the net by senior captain Doug Smotel.  CW had to kill off a late 5 on 3 Holt power play at the end of the game to preserve the victory.  CW outshot Holt 28 to 10 on the night.  Austin Hull was in net for the Comet Warriors.

Treven Fech (17) and Doug Smotel (9) celebrate the go ahead goal in the third period, while Holt's Kevin Maier (3) and Jeff Reisner (18) look on.

Grand Ledge Waverly 8
Mt. Pleasant 2
(2-11-09)

The Comet Warriors won their 21st game of the year on Wednesday night.  Goal scorers included Doug Smotel (with a hat trick!), Evan Olds, John Duckworth, Ryan Hull, David Feldpausch, and Brad Kurzynowski.  Kyle Sawyer was in net for CW.

Speaking of Kyle Sawyer...

... Congratulations go out to Grand Ledge Waverly's own Kyle Sawyer!
Kyle participated in High School Journalism Day at the Joe.  Michigan high school students interested in journalism got a chance to question the Red Wings players and staff.  Click on this link: http://redwings.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?catid=-6&id=33121 to see how well Kyle represents his team, his school, and the Grand Ledge journalism program.

Grand Blanc 1
(2-7-09)

CW wins their 3rd consecutive Durand Invitational Tournament in 2 OT.

The Comet Warriors won a thrilling 2 to 1 double overtime game against the Grand Blanc Bobcats to secure their third consecutive Durand Invitational Tournament.  CW opened the scoring in the 2nd period when Even Olds scored on a power play.  Grand Blanc came back to tie the game with 4:24 to go in regulation.  However, Austin Hull completely shut down the Bobcats by stopping all 13 shots in overtime.  Doug Smotel secured the victory with a pinpoint laser shot directly over the Bobcat goalie's right shoulder.  The play was setup by Evan Olds, as Treven Fech kept the puck in the zone while taking a huge hit.

The game winning goal can be seen HERE.

WANTED !

Have you seen this skater?  Goes by the name of "Bighead".
It is believed that he may be responsible for a stolen double overtime championship game from the Grand Blanc Varsity Hockey Team.  This robbery may have occurred on or about the later afternoon of Saturday, February 7, 2009.   If you do happen to see him, please, do not shoot, because he will stop you!

Madison Heights Bishop Foley 2
(2-6-09)

The Comet Warriors beat the Bishop   Foley Ventures from Madison Heights on Friday night.  The final score was 10-2, as the mercy rule kicked in with 9:30 remaining in the 3rd period.  Evan Olds lead the team with 6 goals, Treven "Crow" Fech had 2 goals, and John "Quack Quack" Duckworth and Doug Smotel each got 1 goal.  Kyle Sawyer picked up the win in net.

CW now moves on to play the Grand Blanc Bobcats in the championship game of the Durand Invitational Tournament.

The Grand Ledge Waverly Ice Hockey Association would like to extend their deepest thanks to all those that helped sponsor and contribute to this year's Comet Warrior Game Program.  Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Comet Warriors WIN...
... the Speed Skating skills competition event, following a loss to Eastside 1-0

Eastside Stars hand Comet Warriors their first loss

Grand Ledge Waverly played another solid game on both offense and defense but just couldn't get the puck to bounce their way at Saturday's 3rd annual CAAC Varsity Hockey Showcase.  Jon Sheets, the Stars goalie, stood on his head and stopped every Comet Warrior shot, handing CW their first loss of the season.  CW had several breakaways and several power plays, but the Stars goalie was able to stop every shot.  It was a strange game for CW that saw a penalty shot awarded, a rare too many men on the ice penalty, and a CW goal that was called off by an inadvertent referee whistle.

The Comet Warriors, still in first place in the CAAC, now set their sights on the Jackson Vikings (Wed. 1/28) and the MERC Jets (Sat. 1/31).

Welcome to the Jungle

Comet Warriors defeat the Eastside Stars 6 - 2

Grand Ledge Waverly played a solid game on both offense and defense to solidify their first place standings in the CAAC.   The first and last goals were scored by Evan Olds, with Dunlap, Fech, Duckworth and Smotel each adding to the tally.  The Comet Warriors took several penalties, but the penalty kill was very effective in shutting down the Stars.  Hull stopped 16 shots, with 2 goals getting in through inadvertent touches by CW players.  These two teams meet again on Saturday at the CAAC Showcase.

Another one bites the dust
(1-10-2009)

The Grand Ledge Waverly varsity hockey team continued their winning ways on Saturday by shutting out the Clio Mustangs 6-0 at Munn Arena.  Five different Comet Warriors contributed to the balanced scoring attack.  Goal scorers included: Smotel (2), Olds, Popa, Duckworth and Feldpausch.  Comet Warriors' net minder  Kyle Sawyer recorded the shut out, the team's third in a row. The Comet Warriors have started the season by winning 12 straight games (plus two scrimmages).  (Click here for the goal of the game.)

The Fast and the Furious
(1-9-2009)

The Comet Warriors got out to a scorching start on Friday night by scoring on five of their first six shifts!   The Comet Warriors scored 6 goals in the first period and 2 more goals in the second period to mercy the Cougars 8-0.  Scoring was lead by Fech and Klingbiel, each with two tallies.  Additional goals were scored by Wise, Duckworth, Olds and Smotel.  The Comet Warriors limited the Cougars to only 5 shots on the night.
